Sheriff Luther Rice Venable

Mr. Venable was born about 1815 in Kentucky or Tennessee and died in Van Buren County about April 1866 when, records show, his wife appeared in probate court to claim his estate. The family came to Van Buren County about 1840 from Henry County, Tennessee, where he had married Margaret Wynns. After serving as sheriff for eight years, he was county representative in 1859 and 1860. Rice Venable went into the 10th Arkansas Infantry June 22, 1862 and served until June 5, 1865 when he retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
