James Wilson Hatchett was born in Clinton on December 17, 1874 to John K and Dicey Pate Hatchett. He died February 16,1955 in Little Rock and is buried in Clinton Cemetery. Mr. Hatchett married Jennie Hulda Peel, daughter of former Sheriff William Peele, and Kate Maddox Peel, in 1899. He was a deputy and then elected sheriff in 1900 where he served two terms. He was in the mercantile business until he was elected again as sheriff in 1927 and served until 1938. He served as county judge from 1943 – 1946 when he retired. Sheriff Hatchett was a man who did not like to arrest anyone unless absolutely necessary.
